FIND YOUR ILLINOIS LEGISLATOR

How to Find Your IL Legislators

You can find your ILLINOIS ELECTED OFFICIALS on your computer, smart phone or tablet!  This is the most important thing you can do for labeling GMOs.

1. Go to the Illinois Board of Elections website:  www.elections.il.gov.
2) In the upper left corner click on District/Official Search.
3) On the next screen click on the MOBILE/LITE version of the software on the right (no matter whether you are using a desktop computer, cell phone or tablet.)
4) Fill in your address including city, state and zip code in the box under the map and click “find address.”
5) Click “OK” in the box that appears.
6) Click “Confirm address” under the new map.
6) You will now get a list of all of your STATE and FEDERAL elected officials.
7) Copy and paste this where you can find it again (or on a cell phone or tablet e-mail it to yourself for future reference)
To contact your ILLINOIS SENATOR (who represents you in Springfield)
Use EITHER the telephone number in Springfield or the local district office.  Speak to a staffer and briefly express your support for SB0734 to Label Genetically Engineered Foods.  If you live in their district be sure to let them know this.  Ask them to be sure to let their senator know you called.
Send an e-mail.  Be sure to include the above information. Unfortunately most legislators do NOT include e-mails on this website, but you can call either of their offices for e-mail addresses.
Or download this publication for these e-mail addresses:  http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/handbook/1314handbook.pdf
Or send your full street address to Joan Levin at legislabel(at)gmail(dot)com and she is happy to look it up for you.

Start a chapter.
What does it take to start an Illinois chapter?  Two or more people who are concerned about labeling of GMOs.

What does a chapter do?  You meet to plan events to educate the public on GMOs and the Illinois labeling bill.  Examples of events you can plan are – showing documentary movies, setting up a table at a health fair, giving a short presentation on GMOs with Q&A afterwards.  You also may occasionally meet with other chapters.

How do you start a chapter?  Gather as many people as you can, get their contact information, and plan a meeting time/date/location.

Do I need to use Meetup.com to advertise my chapter meeting?  Yes, as we keep all meetings in one place so anyone can attend.  Ask your chapter members to get an account at Meetup.com (it’s free) at
http://www.meetup.com/Illinois-Right-To-Know-GMO/.  Also contact Joan Levin at legislabel@gmail.com to request that your meetings be published regularly in Meetup.com.
